Definition of communication

1. Origin  of the word "commuication" (textbook p.40)

Communication is derived from the Lation word "communicare", meaning "to share with" or "to make common", as in giving to another a part or share of your thoughts, hopes, and knowledge. ——defined in the Random House Dictionary of the English Language


2. Different perspectives on communication (textbook p.40)

Western perspective: (1) studied as a means of transmitting ideas

(2) emphasize the instrumental function of communication

(3) effectiveness is evaluated in terms of success in the manipulation of others to achieve one's personal goal

Eastern perspective： (1) stress harmony

(2) emphasize the relationships between communicators

(3) defined as a process where all parties are searching to develop and maintain a social relationship
