A new craze[an activity, object or idea that is extremely popular for a short time] is sweeping the city of Toronto, Canada. More and more board game cafés are opening in different neighbourhoods.[an indoor game played on a specially designed board made of thick card or wood]
In some of the cafés, customers pay an hourly rate to play tabletop games; in others a flat fee allows them to play for an unlimited time. On top of the fee, the cafés also require customers to purchase food and drinks.
Most cafés offer hundreds of games, varying from classics like "Monopoly" and "Battleship" to European strategy games like "Settlers of Catan" and "Agricola". They also have staff members to teach customers the rules of the game if necessary. This means that players are more comfortable exploring games that they haven't played before.
People enjoy going to these cafés because they can try out the games. It is cheaper than buying the games and then deciding they don't like them. Also, it's like having a party with your friends – but not at your own house!
