Developing Your Skills
Part A: Working Out the Relevance
Frequently, in narrative writing, events do not seem particularly relevant when they are first described. It is only later in the story that their relevance is realized. The events are introduced to build up the suspense of the story.
To fully appreciate a narrative, it is important to be able to relate information backwards and to be able to anticipate future events.
Read again each of the following extracts from the narrative and explain how the reader realizes their relevance later on in the story.
Part B: Continuing the Story to a More Definite Conclusion
The final paragraph of the story has been deliberately cut short to create the sense of mystery and suspense. How do you think the paragraph could have continued if the writer had wanted to explain more fully what happened?
Work with a partner to write another fifty words to bring the story to a more definite conclusion.
